The
MOEA and the Council of Agriculture have announced plans to invest
NTD 1.3 billion over the next four years to develop Taiwan's deep sea water resources. These funds will be used to pursue research and development on industrial applications for deep sea water and develop the market for goods using deep sea water.
The nation's deep sea water industry is expected to ultimately achieve an annual production value in excess of
NTD 18 billion. In recent years, deep sea water has been used in health food products, cosmetics, beverages and aquaculture.
International research shows that Taiwan's east coast is one of the few ideal locations in the world for the development of deep sea water resources. The deep sea water off this coast contains an abundance of minerals and nutrients and can be reached just a few hundred meters from the shore.
The Executive Yuan has already granted its approval to policy guidelines for the use and development of Taiwan's deep sea water resources. These guidelines list the deep sea water industry as a major target for government guidance.
It is estimated that private enterprises have already invested over
NTD 10 billion in recent years to develop Taiwan's deep sea water resources. Among these investments are an
NTD 1.2 billion investment in the construction of the Hualien Deep Sea Water Hotel and an
NTD 5 billion investment in the establishment of the Hualien Marine Biotechnology Park. Other deep sea water projects are being pursued by private enterprises in Ilan County and Tiatung County on Taiwan's east coast. The Taitung County government has also initiated an
NTD 2 billion build-operate-transfer project aimed at developing deep sea water resources for both tourism and industrial purposes.
