IT and foreign enterprises make up top-ten companies for worker happiness

July 28, 2005

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Chi Mei Optoelectronics and Ford Lio Ho Motor Co. are the top-three companies in order for employee satisfaction, according to a survey conducted in May by Business Today magazine and 104 Job Bank, an on-line employment services company. Predictably, most workers said good salaries were the most important factor affecting worker happiness, while good bosses and leadership and bonuses were rated the second and third most important factors.

The companies rounding out the top-ten are in order Accton Technology Corp., AU Optronics Corp., Hewlett-Packard, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., China Motor Corp., Merck Sharp & Dohme and IBM-Taiwan.

Of the top-ten "happy companies," all are either Taiwanese enterprises listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange or foreign enterprises and seven are information technology companies.

The survey also found that age affects what workers consider the most important factor for employee satisfaction. Younger employees born in the 1970s and 1980s rate good salaries as the main determinant for happiness, while older workers born in the 1950s and 1960s say employee happiness comes primarily from good bosses and leadership.
