Fujitsu, the world's third largest systems solutions provider, is establishing an
R&D center in Taiwan in order to develop closer product development partnerships with Taiwanese enterprises. Fujitsu's
R&D center is likely to lead to an increase in the value of procurements the Japanese company places with Taiwanese enterprises. The
MOEA is expected to grant approval for the center in the near future.
With the establishment of the center, Fujitsu plans to transfer technology for hand-held devices, biometrics, ecommerce and multimedia to its Taiwanese suppliers in order to strengthen cooperation on the development of new products. Fujitsu intends to also work on radio frequency identification (RFID) and medical technology at the center. Following the establishment of Taiwan
R&D centers by Sony and NEC, the center would be the third such facility set up by a major Japanese information technology company in Taiwan.
In 2004, Fujitsu made procurements of approximately
NTD 46.8 billion in the Greater China region. About 60% to 70% of these orders went to Taiwanese enterprises including AU Optronics, Quanta Computers, Wistron and Gigabyte Technology. The main focus of Fujitsu's procurements from Taiwanese companies in the coming future will be third generation telecommunications, smart mobile devices and flat panels.
While in the past Fujitsu obtained notebook computer components in Taiwan for assembly in Japan, this year it began outsourcing assembly work directly to Taiwanese manufacturers. Now the Japanese company obtains tens of thousands of notebook computers per month from Taiwan.
