With plans to place more orders for notebook computers, Internet equipment and mobile phones, Japan's NEC says that it expects to make total procurements of
USD 2.9 billion in Taiwan in 2005. This value would be over 10% more than the
USD 2.6 billion in procurements NEC racked up in 2004.
NEC says that, despite the global trend of shifting production to China, Taiwan's strategy of moving production to China while keeping
R&D and design in Taiwan means that NEC will continue to place most of its procurement orders through the headquarters of Taiwanese enterprises in Taiwan.
NEC relies heavily on Taiwanese enterprises for a wide variety of
IT products including notebook computers, desktop computers, telecommunications products, silicon wafers, servers and memory chips. Almost all of NEC's notebook computers are procured through Taiwanese companies. Its main notebook suppliers are Quanta Computer Inc., First International Computer Inc. and Arima Computer Corp.
