Taiwan's IC sector projected to hit NTD 1.28 trillion this year

July 7, 2005

The annual production value of Taiwan's semiconductor industry will grow 16.4% on the year to reach NTD 1.28 trillion this year, according to projections released by the MOEA Industrial Development Bureau. The bureau says that, driven by the promotion of digital home technology, demand for chips for such devices as personal computers, servers and telecommunications products will fuel growth in this sector this year.

The IDB estimates that the production value for IC design in Taiwan will grow 15.7% to NTD 302 billion this year; that for semiconductor manufacturing will rise 17.3% to NTD 732.2 billion; that for IC packaging will increase 13.7% to NTD 178.1 billion; and that for semiconductor testing will go up 16.1% to NTD 67 billion.

Taiwan' contract silicon chip manufacturing industry attained a global market share of 67.6% in 2004, making it the world leader in this category. The nation's IC design industry, at 28.2%, had the world's second largest market share in this sector in 2004.

The IDB says that five IC design companies have already moved into the Nankang SoC Design Park, which the IDB established in 2003 with the goal of making Taiwan the world's IC design leader. Two more companies will set up in the park this July.
