In the six years from 1999 to 2004, Taiwan has invested
NTD 7.83 billion in energy conservation
R&D and promotion that has resulted in total energy savings of
NTD 30.46 billion, according to officials at the Industrial Technology Research Institute. That this energy conservation work has created a payoff nearly four times the value invested highlights the economic value of the efficient use of energy.
In addition to these energy savings, other benefits of these conservation efforts include the creation of over 5,000 job opportunities and an 11 million-kiloton decline in Taiwan's carbon dioxide emissions.
Although Taiwan has yet to be invited to sign the Kyoto Protocol, the nation is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in line with the requirements of the international treaty. In addition to helping Taiwan achieve its own goal of sustainable development, compliance with the treaty is particularly important to Taiwan's export sector whose products must meet environmental regulations enacted by its trading partners.
Taiwan presently accounts for 1% of global greenhouse gas discharges, ranking it 22nd in the world.
The development of renewable energy is one of the main focuses of the government's economic development plans.
