The number of visits made from abroad to Taiwan in the first four months of the year rose 18.5% on the year to 1.069 million, according to the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, which obtained its figures from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The number of visits by Japanese travelers rose 49.9% to 362,000. This is the greatest degree of growth for any nationality coming to Taiwan in this period.
People from Asia made 842,000 visits to Taiwan in this period, the most for any region. Those from the Americas and Europe accounted for the second and third largest numbers of visits, at 147,000 and 57,000 respectively. Travelers from Hongkong and Macao and from the United States posted the second and third greatest numbers of visits behind Japan, at 136,000 and 125,000 respectively.
With the government heavily promoting tourism to Taiwan, tourists accounted for the largest number of visits in the first four months of the year. The number of visits by tourists rose 51% to 417,000. Business travelers posted 316,000 visits, the second highest figure.
Going in the other direction, the number of visits made by Taiwanese out of the country rose 8.3% to 2.58 million in this period. The greatest portion of this traffic, 885,000 visits, flew into Hongkong.
