Taiwan's digital camera leaders optimistic about second quarter

May 31, 2005

Taiwan's leading digital camera contract manufacturers Premier Image Technology Corp. and Altek Corp. are optimistic about the second quarter because, despite increasing global market demand, production capacity in Japan has been shrinking, and companies are turning to Taiwanese manufacturers to fill orders as a result.

Premier turned out 1.4 million digital still cameras in the first quarter and expects to boost this figure by 30% by making 1.82 million cameras in the second quarter.

While Premier primarily supplies Japanese companies, Altek's main customers are Kodak and Hewlett-Packard of the United States. Altek is looking forward to the second quarter because it is preparing to release a number of new models. Altek also notes that the second half of the year is the peak sales season for the digital camera market.

Altek produced 800,000 digital still cameras in the first quarter. It expects to make 1.2 million cameras in the second quarter, an increase in output of 40% compared to the first quarter.

Premier and Altek are projected to manufacture an amazing 7.5 million and 5 million digital cameras respectively this year.
