A statistical report in the latest edition of CommonWealth Magazine, Taiwan's leading business monthly, regarding Taiwan's top 1,000 enterprises over the last twenty years provides some interesting insights into Taiwan's economic development.
Only 25% of the top 1,000 manufacturing enterprises twenty years ago are still on the list. With the exception of Chinese Petroleum Corp., the companies among the top ten have all changed. The highly competitive service sector had a survival rate of 13% for companies that were on the top 1,000 list twenty years ago. The financial sector, due partially to a recent wave of mergers, posted a survival rate of 17%.
The average annual revenues of the leading 1,000 enterprises were
NTD 1.6 billion twenty years ago, and expanded to
NTD 10.2 billion by 2004. The average production value per employee has risen from
NTD 2.5 million to
NTD 12 million.
The report shows that the combined revenues of the top 1,000 manufacturers surpassed Taiwan's GPD for the first time in 2004. This is a sign that Taiwanese manufacturers are getting bigger and that they are expanding globally. Already, 60% of Taiwanese enterprises have set up operations in China or other overseas locations.
