IBM's xTDC R&D center cranks out five server products in just ten months

May 23, 2005

The IBM xSeries Taiwan Development Center, in the ten months since its establishment in July 2004, has developed five new high-end server products. The five newly developed products include three IBM xSeries servers, the x206, x306 and x226, and two IBM IntelliStation work stations, the Z Pro 20 and M Pro 30.

IBM sold its personal computer division to China's Lenovo Group and is focusing on the server market. IBM is the world's leading server maker, accounting for 33.3% of worldwide server revenues in 2004. The global server market grew 6.2% to USD 49 billion in 2004.

While IBM operates three R&D centers in the United States, the xTDC is the first IBM R&D center established outside of the US. There are 100 Taiwanese personnel pursuing R&D at the center.

With 1,500 ping (one ping measures approximately 36 square feet) of floor space in Taipei's Nankang Software Park, the xTDC is designed as an IBM "Mission Lab." In this capacity, IBM headquarters sets the center's overall R&D direction, leaving the center entirely free to work closely with Taiwan's OEM and ODM companies to design products that meet the specifications of the market and clients.

The xTDC will be offering ten internship positions for college students in Taiwan this summer in order to help Taiwan further foster its R&D capabilities.
