Ingrid Display and Philips cooperating to deliver e-paper to the market

May 20, 2005

Ingrid Display and Philips formed a strategic alliance in early May in order to cooperate on electronic paper displays, considered a breakthrough technology. Under this agreement, Ingrid will purchase technology from Philips in order to mass produce e-paper displays. Ingrid will then supply these displays to Philips and other companies for use as small and medium displays in commercialized products. Mass production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year or in 2006.

E-paper will be used primarily for reading applications such as e-books. It has the advantage of being energy efficient, therefore using less battery power, and is 30% to 35% less costly to produce than backlit color displays.

This is Ingrid's third strategic alliance of the year. It is working with Japan's Chuhua on the construction of a 2.5-generation color filter plant. With QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies Inc., which has two locations in California and one in Hsinchu, the display maker is cooperating on the development of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) displays.

Ingrid is Taiwan's leading small and medium TFT-LCD display manufacturer. Estimates place the display maker's April revenues at NTD 800 million. However, monthly revenues are expected to rise as the display industry is entering the peak sales season for small and medium displays. Ingrid's display output volume in the second quarter is projected to rise 50% to 100% compared to the first quarter. This increase in output is expected to boost Ingrid's second quarter revenues by at least 30% compared to the first quarter.
