Due to what's called the "Motech Effect," Taiwanese enterprises have rushed to invest in solar cell technology in recent years. Motech Industries, Inc. has racked up huge profits from its sales of solar cells in a market where supply cannot keep pace with demand.
There are presently over thirty companies spanning Taiwan's solar cell production chain. These range from materials suppliers to solar cell manufacturers to companies that perform systems assembly. Industrial Technology Research Institute data shows that over ten enterprises joined this chain in the last two years. Their initial investments are estimated to be over
NTD 4 billion.
Examples of recent investments in solar cells include Tatung Co.'s investment in Green Energy Technology and Delta Electronics' investment in DelSolar Co. Even major petrochemical companies such as Formosa Plastics are taking a serious look into investing in solar technology.
Along with Motech, E-TON Solar Tech, a solar cell maker, and Sino-American Silicon Products Inc., which produces Czochralski silicon, have also been reaping big profits from the solar technology market.
