Motorola expects to set up a
R&D center for broad band products in Taiwan at the end of the year, the mobile phone maker stated in early May. This would be the company's second
R&D center in Taiwan. Motorola established its first, the Motorola Taiwan Product Development Center, in early 2004.
Motorola considers Taiwan important to the development of its broadband products and already makes all of its high-end set-top boxes here. Its procurements in Taiwan rose nearly 100% on the year to around
USD 2 billion in 2004. This value is forecast to rise again this year. Motorola procurements in Taiwan consist mainly of mobile phone parts and components.
In a similar vein, Nokia said recently that its Taiwan Innovation Center will begin operations in May or June. The center will focus primarily on third-generation telecommunications applications by allowing content providers, mobile phone companies and 3G network firms to test their applications. Nokia has already invested
NTD 410 million to set up a testbed in at the center.
