Passenger airlines flying international routes from Taiwan posted some record high figures in 2004, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications at the end of April. The 24.21 million occupied seats on international flights from Taiwan in 2004 is the highest passenger volume ever, as is last year's overall 72.2% occupancy rate for flights out of Taiwan.
Of the 31 airlines offering passenger services out of Taiwan, Taiwan's leading airline China Airlines achieved the highest passenger volume in 2004, with 7.56 million occupied seats. EVA Air posted the second highest volume, with 4.98 million seats occupied. Together these two Taiwanese carriers accounted for 52% of all occupied seats out of Taiwan in 2004. Cathay Pacific Airways flew with 3.19 million seats filled, the third greatest volume in 2004.
While Singapore Airlines filled just 520,000 seats, the ninth largest volume, it achieved a 79.3% occupancy rate, the highest of all carriers in 2004. EVA Air and China Airlines had the second and third highest occupancy rates, at 78% and 74.4% respectively.
Hongkong was the most popular international route out of Taiwan in 2004. The 7.14 million occupied seats on this route accounted for 29.5% of all filled seats out of Taiwan in 2004. Flights to Tokyo carried a total of 2.5 million passengers, accounting for 10.3% of all occupied seats, the second highest volume. Macao was the third most popular destination, with 2.21 million seats accounting for 9.1% of all seats. The combined 9.35 million occupied seats to Hongkong and Macao in 2004, accounting for nearly 40% of all occupied seats leaving Taiwan, give an indication of just how many people are traveling from Taiwan to China via these former colonies.
