Anticipating an annual production value of over
NTD 10 billion for textiles and products made of bamboo carbon fiber in Taiwan, the Taiwan Textile Research Institute has called together government agencies and private enterprises in order to form the Bamboo Carbon Fiber Strategic Alliance. Members of this alliance, which include the Council of Agriculture's Taiwan Forestry Research Institute and such major fiber and textile makers as Nanya Plastics Corp., Tri Ocean Textile Co., Formosa Taffeta Co., Ruentex Group and Sumagh High Tech Corp., will work together to develop and promote bamboo carbon fiber materials and products.
Bamboo carbon fiber, called Black Gold by those in the industry, is resistant to ultra violet rays and possesses anti-odor properties. It also adjusts well to both humidity and dryness. TTRI has already developed bamboo carbon fibers, textiles and products.
Bamboo carbon polyester chip costs
NTD 1,000 per kilogram, two and a half times more expensive that normal polyester chip. Clothing made from bamboo carbon polyester, such as socks, underwear and lingerie, consequently commands a price two to three times more than similar products made of other fibers.
Taiwan currently manufactures over three million kilotons of synthetic fibers annually, while only achieving an annual output of 100,000 kilotons for bamboo carbon fiber. The new alliance is developing ways to combine bamboo carbon fiber with polyester, nylon and other renewable fibers.
