Dell Taiwan announced in mid-April that it is boosting the number of research personnel at is Taiwan
R&D and design center from the current 200 to over 400 this year. These additional
R&D personnel in Taiwan will focus primarily on server
R&D.
Dell is initiating this personnel expansion as it anticipates the release of new Dell 64-bit server models in the first quarter will lead to a greater share of the global server market this year.
In addition, Dell will assign a marketing team from Dell headquarters to Taiwan for the first time this year. With Dell's most important contract manufacturers, Quanta Computers and Compal Electronics, based in Taiwan, this move is aimed at tightening the company's product value chain in order to shorten the time required to take a product from the
R&D stage to the market.
Dell sold 31.77 million desktop and notebook personal computers in 2004, the first year for it to break the 30 million unit mark. Rival Hewlett-Packard, which also relies heavily on Taiwanese manufacturers, attained sales of 28 billion last year. Dell achieved
USD 49.4 billion in revenues in 2004 and expects to further boost this value to
USD 60 billion this year.
Dell racked up a procurement value of
USD 9 billion in Taiwan in 2004 and is expected to increase this value to
USD 10 billion this year.
