Food and drink chain store outlets increase in response to growing trend of eating out

May 3, 2005

The total number of chain store outlets in Taiwan grew 11% to 62,637 in 2004, according to a survey released in late April by the Taiwan Chain Store and Franchise Association. The number of food and beverage establishments grew by 2,802 outlets, the biggest increase among the different categories of chain stores, while the number of general retail goods outlets rose by 1,710 outlets, the second largest increase.

The number of chain stores with three or more outlets rose by 151 from 708 in 2003 to 859 in 2004. Of the total of 62,637 outlets, 18,697 are directly operated, while 43,940 are run as franchises.

The TCFA says that the increase in the number of food and beverage chain store outlets shows that eating out has experienced a significant growth in popularity in Taiwan. The association attributes this development to declining birth rates and the growth in the number of double-income families, which has led to people having fewer family meals at home.

The number of general retail goods chain store outlets grew by 16.9%, the largest growth rate among the chain store categories in 2004. The association says that consumers are drawn to these stores because they are conveniently located and provide a wide variety of goods to meet the daily needs of consumers.
