Program creates high-tech sports and recreation products

May 2, 2005

The Sports and Recreation Industry Development and Guidance Plan, implemented by the Footwear and Recreation Technology Research Institute on behalf of the MOEA Industrial Development Bureau, has succeeded in expanding the technological capabilities of the shoe industry to the sports and recreation industry. In addition to researching global market demand regarding product design and function, the institute has facilitated the use of advanced applied technology in such areas as manufacturing materials, information technology, optics, electromechanics, ergonomics and medical engineering. Though these efforts, the institute has developed high-tech parts and components as well as high value-added "smart" sports and recreation products. What's more, this plan has attracted the attention of both domestic industries and major international buyers and created opportunities for cooperation on the development of new products.

Some of the innovative products developed through this government program include advanced exercise machines, "smart" electronic punching bags, fitness products made of nanotechnology materials, multi-person exercise bikes, massage chairs, RFID (radio frequency identification) anti-theft identification modules for carry bags and bicycles, detachable diving regulators and treadmills.

While these high-tech products already stand as evidence of FRTRI's great accomplishments, the institute will continue to integrate applied technology from various industries in order to provide value-added solutions for Taiwan's sports and recreation industry.
