The government is launching a new industry promotion project intended to make RFID (radio frequency identification) the foundation of a new technological and economic miracle on the Silicon Island. With a U for ubiquitous, the project is called U Taiwan due to RFID's ability to link the various information technology and telecommunications devices of the modern world, and will see the government providing guidance and subsidies to businesses and research organizations in Taiwan that develop this valuable new technology.
Minister without Portfolio Lin Ferng-ching, who is responsible for the supervision of the government's technology policy, will lead of delegation of government and business leaders to the United States at the end of April in order to advance the U Taiwan project. Some of Taiwan's technology leaders are already calling RFID the second
IT revolution.
Taiwan government agencies across areas as diverse as transportation, economics, agriculture, education, health and culture have already provided funding of over
NTD 100 million for various RFID projects. The
MOEA Department of Industrial Technology has increased its
R&D subsidies for private enterprises to
NTD 67 million this year, and is set to further boost these subsidies to over
NTD 100 million in 2006. The Ministry of National Defense's top research unit, the Chung Shan Institute of Science Technology, will begin conducting its own RFID
R&D in 2006.
The international research and consulting company SRI Consulting Business Intelligence estimates that the direct global production value of RFID will reach
USD 3 billion by 2008. It projects the indirect production value of RFID-related businesses will reach an additional
USD 9 billion the same year.
