A seven-person overseas military procurement foreign comparative testing delegation from the United States Department of Defense paid a visit to the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park in early April in order to look into the possibility of cooperating with high-tech enterprises based in the park, park authorities revealed in early April. This is the first such visit by a US military procurement team to Taiwan. Apparently pleased with what it saw, the team will return with representatives from US companies for further discussions at the end of April.
The team is charged with strengthening US battle readiness while lowering procurement costs. The US DOD has made 168 procurements worth a total of
USD 6.6 billion in the 25 years it has run its foreign comparative testing program. Its primary partner nations under this program include Britain, Germany, Sweden, Israel and France.
The US delegation is said to be particularly interested in the science park's optoelectronics and telecommunications companies. Handheld computers and infrared equipment are among the products the delegation is targeting.
It is reported that one HSIP company that manufactures lithium batteries has already received DOD certification and has started taking orders.
HSIP authorities have reportedly begun planning aimed at setting up the park's Tungluo annex as a special zone for the manufacture of high-tech military products. Production may begin as early as July or August.
