Kids and the digital games they play

April 14, 2005

Students and young people that like to play MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing games) with cute themes are representative of the typical digital gamer in Taiwan, according to a survey of Taiwan's digital gaming community conducted by the Institute for Information Industry's Market Intelligence Center.

Regarding the incomes of digital gamers, the survey reveals that 31.7% have monthly incomes of NTD 5,000 or less and 18.8% earn NTD 20,000-25,000 per month. Indicative of the low earning potential of young people, these are the two largest income categories for gamers. The average player spends NTD 534 each month playing digital games, devoting 78 minutes daily to these games. The most common platforms for digital gaming are computers, mobile phones and Sony's Play Station 2.

MMORPG are the preferred category of games in Taiwan, with 26% of players citing these games as their favorite. Brain games, such as chess, cards and mahjong, and games with martial arts themes are the second and third favorite types of digital games.

The survey shows that dating and friend finding web sites generally fail to seduce Taiwan's digital gamers because MMORPG already offer similar services, including online marriages, to players.

While the digital gaming market continues to grow in Taiwan, the rate of growth has tapered off from the super-high annual growth rates of 67% and 140% in recent years. In 2004, the value of this market increased 5% on the year to NTD 7.228 billion. However, it is expected to expand 14% to NTD 8.211 billion this year.
