Semiconductor electronic design automation solutions and services leader Synopsys Inc. signed a memorandum of understanding with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute in mid-March in order to broaden its cooperation with
ITRI's SOC (System-On-a-Chip) Technology Center. This particular agreement is intended primarily to strengthen Taiwan's integrated circuit design capabilities by focusing on the development of technology for 90-nanometer manufacturing processes.
Synopsys announced in 2004 its decision to set up a research and development center in Taiwan. As electronic design automation is an important aspect of IC design, Synopsys not only has close relationships with Taiwan's silicon chip contract manufacturers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Corp., it also counts IC design companies such as Media Tek Inc. and VIA Technologies among its Taiwanese customers.
Synopsys is the market leader for IC design automation tools and software. Taiwan's IC design industry is the second largest in the world with a 26% share of global production value.
