The world's largest specialty chemical company, Rohm and Haas of the United States, has applied to the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park authorities for a 2.9 hectare plot of land at HSIP's Chunan annex and is expected to receive approval soon. In the first phase of this project, the chemical maker plans to invest
NTD 200 million in the construction of a plant that will manufacture chemical materials for such important silicon wafer manufacturing customers as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Corp.
The plant will produce chemicals to make polishing pad materials for chemical machine polishing equipment and polishing fluid.
Rohm and Haas has been pursuing
R&D on polishing fluid and other materials in order to keep up with TSMC and UMC, which have thrown themselves aggressively into
R&D on manufacturing processes for advanced 90-nanometer and 65-nanometer chips. The chemical manufacturer expects its total global
R&D expenditures to reach
USD 280 million this year.
Rohm and Haas already runs a Hsinchu-based Taiwan subsidiary that provides sales and services for chemical materials to its Taiwanese clients.
The chemical materials supplier generated
USD 7.3 billion in sales in 2004. It employs 17,800 personnel in over one hundred plants and
R&D facilities in 27 countries around the world.
