Taiwan's Dopod International has big plans to expand in Asia with its own-brand, high-end mobile phones this year. This first quarter the mobile phone company will set up companies in Hongkong and Singapore and will expand its market to include Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
Dopod is invested in by High Tech Computer Corp., considered Taiwan's leading original design manufacturer for smart handheld devices. It shot to popularity in Taiwan's mobile market with the release of smart phones last fourth quarter. While this new brand only offered four models, it managed to achieve sales of 20,000 units.
Dopod, which has chosen to pursue a high-end model strategy as it considers Taiwan's mobile phone market saturated, plans to release eight to twelve new models this year.
Dopod released its latest high-end model, the Dopod 699, in late February. Priced at
NTD 29,800, the company's strategists have aimed this new model at Taiwan's 350,000 stock market players. This model provides dual-mode GPRS/WLAN capability and is of course equipped with a digital camera. What's a little more innovative is that, in cooperation with Polaris Securities, Dopod has installed stock market software in the 699 that allows users to check the latest stock information and place stock orders over the Internet. The 699 can also work with a Bluetooth keyboard and projector.
