Sun Microsystems, anticipating continued growth in information technology procurements by Taiwan's telecommunications, financial holding and multimedia sectors, will initiate a major expansion of its enterprise consulting services unit in Taiwan this year. Despite general pessimism among the world's
IT companies concerning the global economic climate, Sun has designated this year a "year of growth" in Taiwan and plans to boost its number of employees here to 150 this year, its highest level yet.
Sun is expecting Taiwan's government, manufacturers and educational facilities to also continue expanding their
IT purchases.
Some of the new areas Sun plans to move into in Taiwan this year are radio frequency identification and multimedia. In the future, it also intends to work closely with other enterprises to better provide information center and information management solutions in order to reduce the costs and complexity of Internet-based operations.
As for Sun's software, Java has already been well established in Taiwan. Java cards are commonly used in mobile phones made in Taiwan and in the National Health Insurance card and the new silicon chip automatic teller machine cards.
Eight of Sun's Taiwanese partners have received certification for RFID. Sun plans to expand its promotion of this new technology among Taiwan's manufacturers, educational facilities, medical facilities and transportation enterprises in the future.
