An important high-tech delegation from the US state of New Mexico paid a visit to Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute in late February. New Mexico and Taiwan have been working to promote cooperation and exchange opportunities in the areas of energy, aerospace, nanotechnology, semiconductor optoelectronics, start-up companies and market research.
The delegation of fifteen people included Dr. Jonathan Epstein, a legislative assistant to United States Senator Jeff Bingaman (Democrat-NM), Ms. Jackie Kerby Moore, executive director of New Mexico's Sandia Science and Technology Park, and Dr. Pace Van-Devender, vice president of Sandia National Laboratories.
Taiwan is New Mexico's fourth largest export market. The main products the state exports to Taiwan are electronic components and equipment, industrial machinery and precision instruments.
In 2004, the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, Taiwan's largest and oldest science park, signed a memorandum of cooperation with three science parks in New Mexico. These parks are Sandia Science and Technology Park, University of New Mexico Science and Technology Park and Arrowhead Science Park.
