Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) has received
MOEA approval to open ten new overseas offices this year, council president Chao Yuen-chuan announced in mid-February. The addition of these new offices would bring the total number of TAITRA overseas offices to 45.
TAITRA's initial plan reflects a strong emphasis on Southeast Asia, with new offices slated for Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore. The other five offices are to be opened in South Africa, Chile, the Czech Republic, Spain and the United States.
TAITRA also plans to assign additional personnel to major markets, and has directed its various departments to begin training programs in preparation for these planned assignments.
Chao also pointed to the need for a foresighted, comprehensive plan for the construction of a second-generation large-scale exhibition center in Taiwan in order to meet the future needs of Taiwan's growing exhibition and conference industry.
Chao stressed the council's need for innovation. In line with this need, he said TAITRA is expanding the focus of its promotional activities from traditional trade to business development and from the manufacturing sector and industrial products to such areas as the service sector, commercial tourism and agricultural products. Chao noted that the manufacturing sectors now provides no more than 30% of Taiwan's gross domestic product, while the service sector accounts for over 65%, to back up his expansion plans. He said that TAITRA should promote such service sector industries as the retail sector, health and recreation businesses and tourism.
