Taiwan's Quanta Computers announced in mid-January that it was responsible for approximately 25% of the global output of notebook computers in 2004. The contract computer maker added that it aims to boost its share of the global notebook market to over 30% this year.
Notebook computer sales are forecast to reach 54.88 million units globally this year, according to the Market Intelligence Center of Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry. MIC predicts that Taiwan's manufacturers will account for 73% of this global output.
Quanta expects it notebook output to hit 16 million units this year. This figure includes Quanta's production of Apple Computer's iMac notebook. Compal Electronics, another giant Taiwanese computer manufacturer, predicts it will achieve an annual notebook output volume of 9 million to 10 million. Together the two computer makers plan to make 45% of the world's notebook computers this year.
Quanta says its main clients this year include Acer and BenQ, companies whose notebook sales are forecast to see big growth in 2005.
