The Internet portal Yahoo! Taiwan reports that it brought in revenues of
NTD 16.5 billion from e-commerce transactions in 2004, with
NTD 15 billion of this total coming from its on-line auction business. Statistics show that e-commerce revenues are rising steadily in Taiwan, and Yahoo! Taiwan expects to see its revenues from on-line transactions jump to
NTD 25 billion in 2005.
By initially focusing on establishing itself as a major portal for on-line communities, Yahoo! Taiwan has succeeded in topping rankings in Taiwan for the number of products offered on line, the number of on-line members, on-line transaction rates, and the total value of on-line transactions.
In 2004, Yahoo! Taiwan began charging fees for the placement of goods on its auction site in order to raise the quality of the items offered for sale. It also introduced new user identification procedures and buyer/seller guarantees to improve transaction security. The Internet portal further enhanced the usability on its site of the EZPay on-line payment service and strengthened transaction completion guarantees. These moves are credited with helping boost Yahoo! Taiwan's auction revenues to
NTD 15 billion in 2004.
Yahoo! Taiwan says its primary strategy is to develop comprehensive, mature search engine, on-line auction and on-line shopping services and integrate these services into a one-stop solution that will allow Internet consumers to find and purchase the goods they desire.
Taiwan's e-commerce market generated total revenues of
NTD 22.1 billion in 2003 and
NTD 34.7 billion in 2004, and is expected to achieve revenues of
NTD 50.1 billion in 2005, according to statistics released by the Market Intelligence Center of the Institute for Information Industry.
