Taiwan to host massive Asia Pacific insurance conference in 2007

February 2, 2005

The Insurance and Financial Practitioners Association of Taiwan (IFPAtw) has announced that it has won for Taiwan the honor of hosting the ninth conference of the Asia Pacific Financial Services Association (APFinSA), which will be held in 2007. With over 15,000 participants expected to attend, this is a major regional conference, and it looks set to rank as the largest international conference ever organized in Taiwan.

IFPAtw members include Australia, New Zealand, Hongkong, India, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. China has yet to receive approval to join.

The association holds conferences once every two years. The eighth conference will kick off in Malaysia in March.

IFPAtw officials point out that the production value of Taiwan's financial sector is the third largest in the Asia Pacific region, behind Japan and China.

They also admit that while Taiwan has 330,000 insurance salespeople, the second largest number in the Asia Pacific, this number could fall to fewer than 100,000 due to the opening of other sales channels after the establishment of financial holding companies in Taiwan. Some even say that, based on development experiences in other countries, the total number could drop to just 30,000 salespeople.

IFPAtw's desire to improve the quality of insurance salespeople in Taiwan is one reason it is so excited about playing host to the conference. The association says it is essential for insurance salespeople to learn from overseas experiences and develop qualifications as financial consultants. The conference is expected to be a great opportunity to learn from the experiences of other insurance markets.
