III planning to set up first overseas R&D center in India

January 29, 2005

Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry is striving to make greater use of overseas experts and expand international cooperation. Last year the institute hired eleven engineers from India, and is now devising plans to set up a research and development center in India in the fourth quarter. This would be III's first overseas R&D center.

III is pursuing these efforts because it sees a strong need to internationalize its operations and address the present shortage of qualified R&D personnel in Taiwan. Other international cooperation moves include the hiring of a number of senior academics from the United States in late 2004. Along with the Indian engineers, these foreign professionals are conducting R&D in the areas of broadband and wireless networks, systems development, technology development and CMMI.

III officials say that at first there were reservations concerning the hiring of personnel from India. However, within three months of their arrival, institute personnel were extremely satisfied with the contributions of their new colleagues. Now, institute personnel are very supportive of bringing professionals from other countries. III intends to use its Indian engineers to help set up its R&D center in India.

The institute is also working on plans to hire R&D personnel from Russia, Ireland and Vietnam. It foresees these cooperation efforts making Taiwan more visible internationally and helping to expand its markets.
