The Taipei Computer Association formally established a business association for the promotion of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) production and applications in mid-December. TCA chairperson Frank Huang, who will also head the new association, declared his intention to promote the development of a common RFID standard for Taiwan and China and create a first-rate environment for the development of the RFID industry.
MOEA vice minister Shih Yen-shiang, who heads the
MOEA's RFID promotion task force, said at the establishment ceremony for the new association that he looks forward to combining the power of the government with the private sector so as to foster the development of the RFID industry. Shih said that the only way to expand client bases for RFID is to enhance the value of the technology's applications.
Executives from Tatung Co. (consumer electronics), Pretide Technology (RFID design and production), TWN mCommerce & Technology Co. (RFID solutions, TFT-LCD), and eMemory Technology Inc. (IC design of non-volatile memory products; TCA's Frank Huang is company chairperson) are conveners of the four units established under the association: the promotional unit, standardization unit, international exchange unit and technology unit.
Chairperson Huang said that the crucial elements for success in the RFID industry are keeping prices down, proper integration IC chips, and packaging and testing. He added that Taiwan can be very competitive in the RFID market due to its world-class silicon wafer manufacturing capabilities and its comprehensive supply chain.
Evans Data Corp. of the United States predicts that the RFID industry will experience explosive growth of 450% in 2005.
