Internet penetration among Taiwanese enterprises has climbed to 81.1% this year, according to a survey conducted by Focus on Internet News and Data (FIND), a division under the Advanced e-Commerce Institute of the Institute for Information Industry. In general, the study demonstrates that government investments in information infrastructure and the application of information systems by businesses have both grown greatly over the last year.
The number of enterprises that run wireless local area networks (WLAN) grew by over 100% in 2004; the same level of growth was reported for Intranet systems as well. The ratio of Taiwanese businesses that have set up websites increased by about 10% on the year to 35.7%.
The penetration rate among businesses for local area networks has reached 55%, making these networks that most common. The survey shows that 33.6% of companies possess Intranet systems, 11.9% have WLAN, 9% operate electronic data interchange systems, and 8.2% use Extranet systems.
While the number of businesses using the Internet or other on-line networks for sales and procurements expanded by just 1% in 2003, the volume of e-commerce in Taiwan is forecast to grow by 18.1% to
NTD 155.3 billion in 2004 compared to 2003.
The study shows that the most common computer systems among Taiwanese enterprises are enterprise resource planning systems, with 11% having set up such systems. Customer relationship management portals are operated by 7.2% of businesses, while e-learning systems (4.4%), knowledge management systems (3.5%), supply chain management systems (3.4%) are also in use at Taiwanese enterprises.
FIND concludes that despite the rapid growth in the establishment of information infrastructure, there is still a great deal off room for improvement in the use of e-commerce and the application of computer systems.
