Taiwan's television industry is currently in the process of adopting digital television. Fifteen digital television channels began broadcasting this year and a total of 25 channels are scheduled to be offering programs by the end of 2005. The Government Information Office says the government's goal is to have all television sets in Taiwan equipped with digital receivers by 2010.
This digital transition was a major theme at the recent 2004 Taipei TV Festival held at the end of November. The festival, the first international TV festival in Taiwan, was divided into two parts, one designed to introduce new programming and technology to consumers and one intended solely for television companies and media-related professionals. Over 130 enterprises from 20 countries participated in the show. The festival focused on a variety of digital themes, including frequency platforms, TV shopping, home appliances, digital multimedia, audio/video publications, animation and digital content value-added applications.
The government has included the digital content industry in its Challenge 2008 National Development Plan. The development of a flourishing digital television industry is one of the pillars of this program.
