Consensus achieved on Chinese-language Linux compatibility standards

December 14, 2004

Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry and China's China Electronics Standardization Institute recently achieved a consensus regarding the establishment of Chinese-language compatibility standards and a support system for the open source Linux operating system. This type of agreement will benefit the development of open source software in Taiwan and China.

The III says that, compared to the Chinese-language interface for Microsoft's Windows operating system, that for Linux still leaves a lot to be desired, but that more and more people on each side of the Taiwan Straits are throwing themselves into developing Chinese-language compatibility standards for Linux.

This recent agreement includes decisions to establish a framework for cross-straits cooperation on the development of input method standards, standards for the exchange of information in Chinese, and a database of Chinese character fonts.

This consensus is considered a first step. Other issues waiting to be addressed include the mutual readability of documents with simplified or traditional Chinese characters and the usability of software applications.
