Taiwan has the highest wireless network usage rate per capita in the world this year, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). IDC also has ranked Taiwan 20th worldwide in its comprehensive Information Society Index (ISI), up from 24th place in 2003. Taiwan's hustling telecommunications industry also earned the nation a 3rd place ranking globally in the telecommunications category of the index.
The ISI is a comprehensive ranking based on the four categories of computers, telecommunications, the Internet and society. IDC evaluated 53 countries for this year's index.
The top-five nations in this year's index are Denmark, Sweden, the US, Switzerland and Canada. South Korea, at 8th place worldwide, received the highest ISI ranking in Asia.
IDC Taiwan notes that, while most countries in the Asia Pacific region earn only average rankings in the society category, many perform very well in the telecommunications and Internet categories.
In related news, while Taiwan is surely proud of its high global ranking as an information society, it must deal with some of the negative aspects of the reality that earned it this distinction. A survey conducted by the local Internet company PC Home shows that Taiwan's Interneters are suffering from the deluge of junk mail they receive everyday.
PC Home reports that Taiwan has a "spam misery index" rating of 71.76 points, with 93% of those surveyed stating they "absolutely detest" spam. Moreover, 95% say that companies responsible for the distribution of spam should be subject to criminal or civil penalties.
