The Ministry of Economic Affairs Industrial (
MOEA) Development Bureau (IDB) predicts that procurements by overseas information technology, telecommunications and electronics companies in Taiwan will reach
USD 60 billion for the first time in 2005. This would mark a growth rate of 10% compared to this year's expected figures. The IDB expects this year's procurement value to hit
USD 54 billion, up 11.3% from 2003. The bureau points out that the top-20 overseas procurers account for 97% of the procurements in these sectors.
MOEA analysis indicates that the movement of production by Taiwan's
IT and electronics manufacturers to China and their continuing globalization have greatly increased the industry's global competitiveness. Efforts at diversification and the formation of strategic partnerships with major overseas companies have also led to an increase in procurements from overseas.
In the past, personal computers and peripherals were the primary targets of these overseas companies. However, the types of products they now find in Taiwan have expanded to include telecommunications and Internet products, mobile phones and gaming consoles, and procurements of LCD televisions are growing rapidly.
The global leaders are fueling this continued growth in procurements. This year's procurements in Taiwan by Hewlett-Packard (
USD 18 billion), Dell (
USD 8 billion), Sony (
USD 6 billion), Apple (
USD 4 billion) and IBM (
USD 3 billion) total nearly
USD 40 billion. Japan's NEC will post procurements of over
USD 2.5 billion this year.
