Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) says that it aims to make environmentally-friendly technology one of its main development directions. Park managers note that STSP's innovation and
R&D budget has been growing yearly, with this year's budget expanding by a third compared to last year. Optoelectronics and green technology are gradually becoming the prime focuses of this budget.
fTech Corporation is one of the green technology companies based in STSP. It has achieved research success with SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) in making battery-free remote controllers using piezoelectric ceramic. In a piezoelectric unit, the force of a finger creates enough energy for the unit to emit a radio signal to a remote receiver unit. These units are already being used to design remote control light switches.
In another green development at STSP, the Canadian company Palcan Fuel Cells Ltd. has transferred hydrogen fuel cell technology to Taiwan Bo Yan Co., which will establish a factory at STSP in early 2005. Fuel cells generate electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, and are considered the cleanest form of energy.
