Prudential Life Insurance has been in Taiwan for five years now. Since becoming the first insurer to offer unit-linked life insurance policies in Taiwan in 2001, it has accumulated over 100,000 unit-linked life insurance policy holders, more than any other life insurance provider in Taiwan.
Unit-linked policies directly link policy values to investment performance. This is done by formally linking the value of the policy to units in a unitised fund run by the insurance company. The values of the units directly reflect the values of the underlying assets of the fund and fluctuate based on the performance of those investments.
Unit-linked policies vary enormously, but all operate on the principle that all or part of the premiums will be applied to purchase units in the fund at the price ruling at the time of payment.
Prudential's U-link policy emphasizes low premiums and high coverage. The coverage of new Prudential U-link policy holders averaged
NTD 2.5 million in 2003. The average coverage of new life insurance policies in Taiwan was only
NTD 520,000 in 2003, meaning Prudential's average was nearly five times higher.
