A delegation headed by Tainan mayor Su Huan-chi and Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) administrator Tai Chien is touring the United States and Canada with the aim of enticing major international companies to set up operations in STSP. The delegation is making stops in San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, St. Louis and Vancouver, where it will invite businesses to meetings introducing the science park and will also pay visits to companies in these areas.
STSP has rapidly expanded to house the operations of 150 enterprises. These include many internationally-known local and overseas companies, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., United Microelectronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics from Taiwan, Corning and 3M from the US, and NEC Corp. from Japan.
The Tainan branch of STSP has already leased out 95% of its land, while the Kaohsiung branch has taken reservations for over half of its land. STSP is being touted as the best semiconductor, optoelectronics and biotech
R&D and manufacturing center in the world. STSP also plans to develop its Kaohsiung branch as a base for telecommunications companies. On its stop in Dallas the STSP delegation will visit the area's Telecom Corridor in order to gain some experience to be applied to its own development plans.
