Hyundai Merchant Marine extends Kaohsiung Harbor lease for five years

November 1, 2004

Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. (HMM) signed a contract with Kaohsiung Harbor in mid-October that extends its lease for its container center and pier for another five years. HMM currently uses Kaohsiung Harbor as a container transshipment center between Northeastern Asia and Southeast Asia.

While HMM is already using Kaohsiung Harbor as one of its primary empty container terminals, it sees great potential for further development at the harbor and is initiating plans to transfer transshipment operations from Hongkong, Singapore and Busan to Kaohsiung Harbor. The shipping company also intends to make additions to the services it offers in the harbor.

Kaohsiung Harbor officials cite the harbor's efficiency and service quality as reasons for HMM's decision to extend its lease.

HMM was founded in 1976 and has developed into one of the world's largest multi-modal marine shipping companies. As of January 2002, it controlled a fleet of over 119 ships, including full container carriers, LNG carriers, oil tankers and bulk carriers. HMM employs 4,566 personnel worldwide, with 982 in South Korea, 1,958 shipboard and 1,626 based overseas.
