United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) of the United States, the world's largest express carrier and parcel delivery company is reopening its direct Taipei-Europe route in response to growing demand for faster deliveries by exporters based in Taiwan. Three cargo flights are scheduled to fly this new route each week.
UPS-Taiwan says that the reopening of this route is a confirmation of the role of Taiwan's Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport as UPS's Asia Pacific transshipment center. This route is sure to be a great benefit to those electronics and information technology companies in Taiwan that are developing markets in Europe.
UPS originally opened a route between Taipei and Cologne, Germany, in 1998, but the route was cancelled three years ago in the wake of global reactions to the 911 events in the United States. In the meantime, exporters in Taiwan have relied on routes that pass through Hongkong and Subic Bay in the Philippines.
In its previous incarnation, this route traveled through Taiwan in one direction, towards Europe. However, this newly opened route will see UPS cargo planes coming through Taiwan in two directions. Planes will first take off in the United States and fly directly to Taiwan before stopping in Mumbai, India and Dubai, Qatar on their way to their European destination of Cologne, Germany. On the return flight, stops are scheduled for Dubai, Clark International Airport, the Philippines, and CKS before landing back in the United States.
Europe is steadily being established as Taiwan's second largest export market, and present flights are insufficient to meet the time demands of exporters in Taiwan. This new route will be a great advantage to supply and distribution networks based in Taiwan.
UPS's three major transshipment centers are located in Louisville, Kentucky, Cologne, Germany, and Taoyuan, Taiwan (the home of CKS).
