US market intelligence company iSuppli says Korea may have the edge when it comes to low-cost manufacturing for TFT-LCD, but not for long. According to iSuppli estimates, Taiwan's TFT-LCD costs will decrease in 2005 to match Korea.
iSuppli noted that Korea jumped into 5G TFT-LCD manufacturing a year earlier than Taiwan, giving it the head start, but Taiwan's continued investment in 5G production and optimal production efficiency is chipping away at Korea's low-cost advantage.
iSuppli also predicts that in 2005 that Taiwan's flat-panel production output will surpass Korea's, placing the island as the world's top producer.
Zheng Wei-zhi, director of iSuppli Taiwan, said obtaining investment funding for the island's flat-panel manufacturers will play a crucial role in the industry's success, and that Taiwan must continue to invest in large-scale flat-panel factories to lower its production costs.
