IBM working with Taiwan companies to produce RFID controllers

October 5, 2004

Taiwan has taken the next step in developing RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, which is considered to be the next "hot" technology. IBM's R&D Center in Taiwan is currently working with a number of companies in Taiwan to produce RFID controllers, the device that links RFID tags and readers through back-end systems integration and data processing.

IBM Taiwan's Mobile Commerce Manger Wang De-zhong said that while Taiwan companies have served as OEMs for RFID tags and readers, they have had little experience with RFID back-end systems integration and data processing and are thus eager to work with IBM in producing controllers.

IBM touts RFID as an ideal solution for companies such as German retailer METRO, whose proto-type Extra Future Store uses RFID technology to track goods in its entire process chain. IBM is supplying METRO's RFID solution, which aims to bring more efficiency to the store's order and inventory management, avoid stock shortages and lower costs.

Philips' Semiconductor Plant in Kaohsiung also uses RFID technology to improve its manufacturing and supply-chain management.
