Corning Taiwan has the potential to be the company's largest production base if Taiwan becomes the world's highest top flat panel producer, said Corning Display Technologies President James Clappin.
Clappin made the remarks at a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 16 for the first phase of Corning Taiwan's expansion project at the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP), an investment worth approximately
USD 7.5 million. He noted that the new expansion project is Corning's third in Taiwan, with Corning's total investment in Taiwan worth almost
USD 15.3 billion.
The new project includes glass melting and finishing facilities to produce glass substrate for Generation 5.5 and Generation 6 large-size LCD for LCD display makers in Taiwan.
Corning Taiwan President Eugene Verdon said the glass substrate industry would still see growth of 40% to 60% by the end of 2006. Demand for glass will remain steady with the release of new products in Taiwan, said Verdon, adding that he predicts a glass shortage for the long-term.
