The Council for Economic Planning and Development and the other government agencies working on the establishment of the special LCD television zone of the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) say they will complete planning and review for the zone before the end of the year. They report that 24 companies, including Taiwan's LCD TV superstar Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp., have already signed on to set up in the special zone.
The CEPD says that, while Taiwan's flat panel display industry is already a world leader, it is essential that the industry's mid- and down-stream enterprises keep pace with up-stream companies if the industry as a whole hopes to develop more in the direction of high value-added products. For example, although most of Taiwan's flat panel makers currently produce panels of no more than 30 inches, the council notes that moving to larger panels is no problem technologically, the real problem is creating consumer demand. It says that LCD televisions are the perfect demand driver for this industry and that once large-size LCD televisions become the norm, up-stream companies will begin reaping the benefits.
The special annex is located in the vicinity of the STSP and comprises a total of 247 hectares, with 160 hectares available for enterprises.
The 24 enterprises planning to move into the LCD TV zone are forecast to generate an annual production value of
NTD 2 trillion and create 30,000 employment opportunities. They are also expected to create
NTD 19.7 billion in national income and
NTD 330 million in tax revenues.
