Taiwan's science education ranked sixth worldwide

September 13, 2004

Taiwan's schools rank sixth in the world for science education, according to the 2004 World Competitiveness Report issued by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD). Of the Asian countries covered in the report, Taiwan ranked second only after Singapore, an achievement that reflects the island's emphasis on investment in human capital.

Taiwan's primary schools have approximately one teacher for each 19 students, the best teacher-student ratio among all major Asian countries. Taiwan's junior high schools have about one teacher per 17 students, second only to Japan with a teacher/student ratio of one to 15. IMD's analysis of manpower quality indexes indicates that while Taiwan's overall education index is slightly below that of Japan and Singapore, it still ranks in the middle to upper tier of the 60 countries covered in the report.
