Linux production value to climb rapidly to over NTD 100 billion by 2007

September 7, 2004

Participants in the annual strategy meeting in mid August of the Alishan Sunrise Plan, a conglomeration of business, government and academic leaders promoting the Linux platform in Taiwan, predicted that by 2007 Taiwan would achieve annual production values of NTD 100 billion for imbedded Linux hardware and NTD 10 billion for Linux-based software.

With the support of attendees, the Taipei Computer Association also called on the government to adopt double operating systems, ones using both a Linux OS and another OS, for its computers in the future, suggesting specifically that Linux be used for 50% of the government's official forms and document exchange and the National Health Insurance information system.

The Taipei Computer Association has set a goal of training a corps of 5,000 world class Linux professionals in the first stage of its training program.

Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry (III) and Industrial Technology Research Institute have both thrown themselves into the promotion of Linux in Taiwan. The III states that the annual global market for Linux systems will reach USD 4 billion by 2008, and will grow by an average of 58% over the next five years.

Industry representatives also declared their intention of jointly establishing a Linux R&D and accreditation center.

Taiwan's Linux enterprises are preparing to send a large delegation to attend a cross-straights Linux forum in Beijing in October in order to promote cooperation and exchange regarding the use Linux. Executives from Taiwan's PC giant Acer and China's PC leader Legend will present speeches at the forum.

Many of Taiwan's major IT payers are working on imbedded Linux systems. Acer, Shinewave and VIA Technologies are cooperating on the development of digital home appliance servers using Linux platforms. Hon Hai Precision Industry is developing Linux-based mobile phones. Microstar International is working on handheld Linux devices.
