HSIP signs agreements with 3 New Mexico science parks

September 6, 2004

The Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) has signed a memorandum of cooperation with three science parks in the US state of New Mexico. Teaming up with these parks, Sandia Science and Technology Park, University of New Mexico Science and Technology Park and Arrowhead Science Park, will provide the HSIP with opportunities for cooperation and exchange with the national security industry in the United States and facilitate the integration of Taiwan's own technology resources.

The Sandia Science and Technology Park was established in 1998 through both public and private investment. The park, with total investments of USD 160 million, is currently home to nineteen national security technology enterprises and employs 1,000 research and development personnel. As it is affiliated with the national security-related Sandia National Laboratories and specializes in technology for both military and civilian applications, the experience Taiwan gains from this cooperation plan is expected to be applied to the establishment of a military and civilian science park in Tonglo in Miaoli County.

The University of New Mexico Science and Technology Park is a non-profit organization established in 1995 for the purpose of facilitating the commercialization of research at the university. It has gained notoriety for its experience in the commercialization of technology in the fields of optoelectronics, microfluidics, diagnostic medicine and drug research.

The Arrowhead Science Park, also a part of the University of New Mexico system, is well regarded for its successes in the areas of energy technology, information technology, microsystems and nanotechnology. Under the cooperation agreement with the HSIP, Arrowhead will assist in the integration of Taiwan's industrial, academic and research resources.

United States Senator Jeff Bingaman, a Democrat representing New Mexico, has been essential to the mediation and promotion of this cooperation plan. Taiwan's National Science Council has also been an active element in the process leading to the signing of the memorandum.
