The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has recently opened Keelung Harbor to offshore transshipment operations, allowing shipping companies from Japan, Israel, Chile, England, Germany, and the United States to sail directly from Keelung to China.
Companies receiving approval include Yang Ming Marine of Taiwan, Hamburg Sud. and Hapag-Lloyd of Germany, Peninsula Orient Nedlloyd (P&O Nedlloyd) of England, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) of Japan, CSAV Norasia of Chile, ZIM Israel Navigation Co. of Israel, and American President Lines of the U.S.
The Keelung Harbor Bureau notes that Keelung's outstanding location makes it the ideal port of call for short-sea routes and a transshipping harbor for deep sea routes. The harbor's competitiveness will be strengthened not only by the newly introduced offshore transshipment operations but also by the establishment of a free port, which opens in September. In the initial stages, Keelung Free Port will focus on warehousing, container collection and distribution, transit, transshipment, and forwarding. In addition, it will bring in international logistics, assembly, repackaging, packaging, repair, processing and other value-added services.
